Gratitude is not about seeing life through rose tinted glasses or as ‘better than they are.’ It is about not seeing things as worse than they are, which in truth is actually pretty wonderful. Gratitude practice is not syrupy or false. It is real.
Gratitude may not play an explicit role in the teachings of certain spiritual traditions. For example, early/Therevada Buddhism. But the only ‘problem’ of our existence here is one of misperception.
That is why gratitude can be practiced as part of Individuation Habit 5: Manage Your State. But be careful, it might make you enjoy life.
Making a point each morning to jot down what you are grateful for is a powerful way to manage your state for the day. Whilst doing it in the evening can change the meaning of the day
Do not allow the good in your life to become unconscious. Make it conscious.
