How to Talk to Yourself – The Active Imagination Course

“If you apply this method, then I can come in as an occasional adviser, but if you don’t apply it, then my existence is of no use for you.”

Carl Jung

The unconscious contains the seeds of our development. There is arguably no true self-knowledge without engaging with the unconscious mind. Yet, in today’s hyper left-brained world, the role of the unconscious in our lives is often overlooked, misunderstood, and even deeply feared.

The practice we call “active imagination” is the most direct way of reconnecting with this lost and sacred realm. Carl Jung described it as “the vital second part of analysis” and “the best means I know to reduce an inordinate production of the unconscious.”

While Jung is often credited with rediscovering this practice, he was keenly aware of its ancient roots and timeless importance. Engaging with our deepest selves is nothing new; it is an inherent part of what it means to be human and has existed for as long as we have. In today’s world, opening a connection with the unconscious can feel like stumbling upon a lost and ancient technology—and indeed, you are.

Although Jung coined the modern term, he neither gave it capital letters, nor left comprehensive instructions, nor even a fixed definition. He left it to YOU to find your own path to connect with your deepest self. While Jung, along with others like Franz and Johnson, offered an abundance of insight and guidance, its application ultimately rests with you.

This course continues in that spirit, offering its own contribution to developing this vital skill and maximising its transformative potential. You’ll be trained in unguided practice, becoming self-sufficient as you find your own approach to deepening your self-knowledge. It complements the guided practices on the MiC YouTube channel, recognising that there is a place for both guided and unguided active imagination for practitioners of all experience levels.

In this second course of the MiC Know Yourself Programme, we’re going to get practical, learning and honing a transformational skill that you can implement right away. It’s both the logical next step after the first course—The MiC Philosophy—and a suitable starting point for those eager to dive directly into practice.

“There are two roads to knowledge—the longer, slower, more arduous road of rational combination, and the shorter path of the imagination, traversed with the force and swiftness of electricity.

Aroused by direct contact with the ancient remains, the imagination…grasps the truth at one stroke, without intermediary links.”

– Friedrich Karl von Savigny
